Tinnitus and Dizziness: Are the two linked?

Experiencing dizziness, along with tinnitus can have a significant impact on one’s life. It can lead to a person feeling off-balance, disoriented, nauseous and potentially lead to personal injury.  It's important to note that not everyone who experiences tinnitus will also experience dizziness, and vice versa. However, chronic dizziness should not be taken lightly. If you are experiencing dizziness on a regular basis you should consult with a healthcare professional to ensure there are no underlying conditions.

The relationship and impact of dizziness and tinnitus on quality of life and daily functioning.

Tinnitus and dizziness can be linked in a few different ways, as they are both symptoms that can be associated with a variety of underlying conditions.

Possible explanations for the link between tinnitus and dizziness:

  1. Inner ear & middle ear problems: Tinnitus and dizziness can both be caused by issues with the inner ear. The inner ear contains structures that help with both hearing and balance, and problems with these structures can lead to both symptoms. For example, Meniere's disease is a condition that can cause tinnitus, vertigo (a specific type of dizziness), and hearing loss, and it is thought to be caused by an excess of fluid in the inner ear.
  2. Medications: Certain types of medication can be toxic to the hearing and balance symptoms and can lead to dizziness and tinnitus, these are called ototoxic drugs. Typically reducing the intake, or avoiding the medication altogether will help reduce the symptoms. More common medications such as decongestants or allergy medications can also cause dizziness. Consult with your healthcare professional to better understand the side-effects of any medications you are taking.
  3. Stress & Anxiety: Both tinnitus and dizziness can be triggered or worsened by anxiety and stress. People who suffer from tinnitus may become anxious or stressed about their symptoms, which can in turn make the symptoms worse. Similarly, dizziness can be a symptom of anxiety or panic attacks, which can also be a result of excessive stress.
  4. Blood flow issues: Some researchers believe that tinnitus and dizziness can be caused by problems with blood flow to the brain. When blood flow to the inner ear is disrupted, it can lead to tinnitus and dizziness. Some medications that increase blood flow have been shown to improve tinnitus symptoms in some people.

These are just some of the conditions that can influence and cause dizziness. The effects of dizziness can range from nausea and vomiting to lightheadedness or a feeling that your surroundings are spinning. It can also create a feeling of imbalance, which can lead to a fall and could be very dangerous depending on what you are doing at the moment. For some people, spells of dizziness can appear suddenly and only last a few seconds, but for others it can linger and be severely debilitating. Although many cases of dizziness are benign and not harmful, if you are experiencing dizziness, either with or without tinnitus, consult with your doctor.
